How do I Create an Assignment in Canvas?

Use this guide to create an assignment in your Canvas course. You can either create an assignment shell first and add the details later, or create the assignment with all of its details at once.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Open Assignments

In Course Navigation, click Assignments.

2. Choose How You Want to Create the Assignment

Option 1: Create an Assignment Shell

Use an assignment shell if you want to create a placeholder with basic information—such as the assignment name, points, and due date—and add the full instructions later.

Assignment shells can be created within an Assignment Group. Assignment Groups help organize different types of coursework in your course, such as assignments, discussions, quizzes, and surveys.

  1. Locate the appropriate Assignment Group.
  2. Click Add Assignment.
  3. Enter the assignment’s basic information, such as:
    • Assignment name
    • Points
    • Due date, if applicable
    • Assignment type
  4. Click Add Assignment.

Tip: You can return to the assignment later to add the description, submission settings, rubric, and other details.

Option 2: Create the Full Assignment

If you are ready to add all of the assignment details, click + Assignment at the top of the Assignments page.

You can then configure the assignment, including:

  • Assignment Name
  • Description and Instructions
  • Points
  • Assignment Group
  • Grade Display
  • Submission Type
  • Due Date
  • Available From/Until Dates
  • Assign To (everyone, a specific section, group, or individual student)
  • Group Assignment settings, if applicable
  • Peer Review settings, if applicable

When you have finished entering the assignment details, click Save or Save & Publish.

Important: Saving an assignment does not automatically make it available to students. If you are ready for students to access it, select Save & Publish.
