How do I copy assignments from another course?

By seamlessly copying assignments, quizzes, and full modules across Canvas, you gain an essential, time-saving skill to reclaim valuable hours for direct student support and faculty collaboration. Streamlining content migration not only optimizes your administrative workflow, but also provides the creative breathing room needed to rethink course design, innovate your pedagogy, and continuously refine how you deliver instruction.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • In Course Navigation, click the Assignments link.
  • Locate the assignment you wish to copy, then click the
  • assignment Options icon
  • Select the Copy To… option from the pop-up
  • Enter the name of a course, SIS ID, or course code in the Select a Course field

(Search results are sorted by term, with the default term first, followed by the most recent term start date. Results for each term are sorted alphabetically and display the course name, course code, and term name.)

  • Select the course into which you want to copy the assignment.

(Note: The Select a Course drop-down menu only displays courses in which you have an active or future enrollment. Assignments cannot be copied to a concluded course.)

  • If you wish, you can copy the assignment into a specific module and location within a course.
  • Click or type a module name in the Select a Module field. Then select the module for the copied assignment.
  • To select a location within the module, click the Place drop-down menu. You can select to copy the assignment to the top of the module, before or after a specific module item, or at the bottom of a module.

(When copying content, a message appears explaining that previously imported content from the same course will be replaced, while manually added content will remain.)

  • Click the Copy button.
  • Canvas displays a notification when an assignment copies successfully.
  • When finished, click the Close icon or the Close button.

(Copied assignments display on the Assignments Index Page in the Imported Assignments group for the course into which it was copied.)

TLC Pro-Tips for Course Enhancements

    • Accessibility Check: Always run the native Canvas Accessibility Checker (the small person icon at the bottom of the Rich Content Editor) before publishing a new content page. This ensures all tables, text colors, and media elements remain fully accessible to all modern learners.
    • Student Interaction: Consider integrating short, informal Canvas surveys. This active feedback measure lets you stay highly responsive to ongoing student academic and personal growth needs.
    • Question Stem Construction: Follow the faculty item development guide to have the strongest, concise question stems that will help lead to better assessments with better measurable results.
