How do I create surveys in Canvas?
By integrating flexible, survey-type quizzes into your modules, you gain a versatile, low-stakes tool to foster authentic student reflection while leveraging centralized reporting to reduce administrative burden and focus on impactful teaching.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link.
- Click the Add Quiz/Survey button.
- Then, click the Submit button
- In the Assignment Name field, enter the name of your survey. To select the survey type, click the Quiz Type drop-down menu
- To hide student names from graders when they view survey submissions in SpeedGrader, click the Keep Submission Anonymous checkbox
- If you selected Graded Survey, enter the number of points students will receive for completing the survey.
- In the Assign area, you can assign the survey to students, add due dates, and add availability dates.
- To save your quiz details, click the Save button. To save and publish your quiz, click the Save & Publish button.
- To open the New Quizzes build page and add questions and content to your quiz, click the Build button.
- Clicking the Save or Save & Publish button returns you to the page where you opened the quiz.
- If you clicked the Save or Save & Publish button and returned to the page where you opened the quiz, you can click the Options icon, then click the Build link
- To add content to your survey, click the Add button.
- To insert new content, click the button for the survey question.
Surveys support the following question types:
- Note: When creating or editing a survey, there is no option to select a correct answer, and the Points fields do not display.
- In the Moderate tab, click the View Log link in the activity logs to see individual results.
- In the Reports tab, you can view a breakdown of the results for each question. To view individual student responses, click the response link. To download a CSV file of a survey’s results, click the Generate CSV link, then click the Export button.
- In anonymous surveys, participants’ names appear as “Student” followed by a number (e.g., Student 3).
TLC Pro-Tips for Course Enhancements
- Data-Informed Insights: If utilizing Canvas Quizzes or New Analytics, check your course data after the first week of the term. This insight will help you identify which resource folders students are accessing most frequently.
- Accessibility Check: Always run the native Canvas Accessibility Checker (the small person icon at the bottom of the Rich Content Editor) before publishing a new content page. This ensures all tables, text colors, and media elements remain fully accessible to all modern learners.
- Student Interaction: Consider integrating short, informal Canvas surveys. This active feedback measure lets you stay highly responsive to ongoing student academic and personal growth needs.
