How do I create a quiz in Canvas?

By using properly designed quizzes, you gain a reliable, objective tool to measure student growth while building the confidence to effectively prepare future optometrists for board exam success.

  • Student-Centricity: This configuration may be helpful for reducing student confusion and creating a highly structured, supportive environment.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Navigate to the left-hand global navigation bar inside Canvas and select Quizzes.
  2. Now, on the right side of the screen, click on the button that says +Quiz/Survey.
  3. Click on New Quizzes/Surveys in the Choose a quiz engine pop-up window.
    1. Pro tip: click the ” Remember my choice for this course” checkbox so you will not have to choose between both options again.
  4. Fill out the information in the Details tab. Assignment name, Quiz type, Points, Assignment Group, Display Grade as, Assign Access
  5. Now click on the Build button
  6. Fill out the Instructions in the rich content editor. Click done
  7. Click the “+” to insert content. Multiple-choice questions are typical and are easiest to align with the style and practices of the NBEO boards.
  8. Fill out Question Title, Question Stem, Possible Answer
    1. To closely align questions and items to the NBEO board exam, follow the Faculty item development guide.

TLC Pro-Tips for Course Enhancements

    • Accessibility Check: Always run the native Canvas Accessibility Checker (the small person icon at the bottom of the Rich Content Editor) before publishing a new content page. This ensures all tables, text colors, and media elements remain fully accessible to all modern learners.
    • Student Interaction: Consider integrating short, informal Canvas surveys. This active feedback measure lets you stay highly responsive to ongoing student academic and personal growth needs.
    • Question Stem Construction: Follow the faculty item development guide to have the strongest, concise question stems that will help lead to better assessments with better measurable results.
